Spread the love

Teamwork skills is one of the necessary skills you should possess, if you work with a group of people in a team. It makes your relationship with the other team members seamless, increases your chances for raises, promotions and other earnings. No matter your experience level or position, continuously focusing on becoming a better team player will lead to success in your career.

Here are ways you can improve your teamwork skills

  • Always meet your deadlines

Reliability is especially important during group projects. If any member of the team misses their deadline, the whole team can be negatively affected. Don’t let this negativity come from you. Also, offer help. If you see a coworker who seems overwhelmed or is struggling to keep up with tasks, ask if you can help. Team players support each other during difficult times. Remember to ask for help, as well.

  • Be open-minded

Listening skills and being receptive to feedback from co-workers is very important for you as a team player. So, instead of getting defensive when you receive constructive criticism, see what you can glean from their advice. In fact, it is better to ask for  feedback from your co-workers. For instance, after completing a group assignment, ask your peers for suggestions on how to improve on your next project.

  • Respect others team members.

Know that other team members are also trying to fulfill their roles, and consider how you can support them. Take the time to get to know your team. Everyone has a role to play that is no less critical than your own.

  • Appreciate other people’s work styles

Working with a variety of personalities can be challenging, particularly in today’s multigenerational workforce. However, understanding how each of your colleagues works best can make you a better team player. Tailor your communication style to different personalities to help you avoid issues with co-workers and collaborate more efficiently.

  • Communicate often with others.

Keep your team updated on your progress and what you need to be successful in your job. You should be in constant communication with your team to ensure that everyone is working toward the same goal.

  • Adapt fast

Understand that there will be plenty of flops along the way as you work as a team. That is why flexibility is one of the key traits of a team player. So, the next time you encounter a problem, make sure you respond judiciously and adapt fast. Fail fast and fail forward.

  • Celebrate teammates’ successes.

One of the easiest ways to build authentic relationships with co-workers is to give credit where it’s due. If a member of your team succeeds in the workplace, so do you. It means you are one step closer to completing a goal. Celebrate their success. Also, you may stay updated on their personal lives and take the time to express interest and care.

  • Focus on the team’s goals

The ultimate foundation of being a team player is a person being willing and able to put the team’s interests above his or her own. So, while you want to distinguish yourself as a top performer poised for greatness, it is still important to focus on the bigger picture when working on a group project. Let your team members know that you are focused on the team’s goals, and also get them to focus.

Conclusively, If you are unsure about what areas you need to improve to be a better team player, ask a trusted friend or colleague for honest feedback about your teamwork skills. Where there is a loophole, set SMART goals to improve those skills over time.
