YouTube’s CEO Susan Wojcicki has announced that she is stepping down from her role to prioritize her family, health, and personal projects. In a blog post, she expressed confidence in YouTube’s leadership team and announced that the company’s Chief Product Officer, Neal Mohan, will be taking over as the head of the video platform, which is owned by Google.

Wojcicki also stated that she will continue to support the company in the short term and praised Mohan’s work launching YouTube TV and leading YouTube Music, Premium, and Shorts.

Additionally, Wojcicki confirmed that she has accepted an invitation from Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, to take on an advisory role across the company and its portfolio of Alphabet companies. She expressed her enthusiasm for using her past experiences to provide counsel and guidance to Google and its various ventures.

Who is Wojcicki?

Wojcicki has been with Google since 1999, when she was hired as the company’s first marketing manager, and CEO of YouTube since 2014. She was instrumental in the creation of Google’s ad and analytics products like AdWords, AdSense, and Google Analytics.

Her tenure as CEO has coincided with YouTube’s meteoric rise to prominence; the site now attracts more than 2 billion unique visitors every month, making it only slightly behind Google in terms of traffic. New features like YouTube TV, YouTube Music, and YouTube Shorts have all been introduced under her watchful eye.

Wojcicki has been criticized for how the platform deals with hate speech and disinformation despite her reputation as an advocate for free expression on the site. She has worked to increase the number of women in IT leadership roles and is a vocal supporter of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Wojcicki’s resume also includes stints at Intel and Bain & Company prior to her current role at Google. She graduated from Harvard with a degree in history and literature and from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management with an MBA.
